From a fallen tree on a Santa Barabara cliff I watch three dogs
grapple with Pacific ocean.
Nestled in a bed of hitchhikers; are they battling the body
or the concept?
They reel back and forth,
from the fishing line of waves.
It dawns upon the dog in me that Pacific is a misnomer-
like naming a parking-lot a driveway;
This water is hardly peaceful in character and if anything
renews my mythological fate in Atlantis.
In a game of Monopoly, beaches remain the final Get Out of Jail Free card:
neutralizing territory.
One should think that upon the protohuman discovery of beaches, our ancestors behaved very much the same ways we do today:
relaxation
congregation
recreation
procreation
relaxation. Moreover,
Disparities between individual players of the game are w a s h e d a w a y.
This is not to say that all beachgoers are created equal-
but that beaches are one of the few place in society where it doesn’t matter what you’re wearing (and normal if you’re not), your wallet is irrelevant (and better left behind), space is always shared (or prepare to be told), and everyone’s on board (ahoy)
If I were a dog that could not swim, then I would drown in the concept.
puddles languish half asleep,
cascades corrupt the scene,
as if woken from a dream ~
Two PIKE jumping SIAMESE!
where days doubt their end,
a sonata so serene,
acquiescence at the seams ~
Mud SWALLOWS the TREES!
clouds watercolor sky,
moon hare as the guide,
reflects aquatic life ~
Rabbit IN the SKY?! We gotta get out of here.
about
This is my attempt to replicate the soothing nature of the sea - a body both still and moving.
The corona virus pandemic has brought with it a fast-paced blur of emotions, questions, and anxieties. As the outside world becomes a source of stress, introspection serves paramount importance for peace in lieu of panic. Revisiting softer memories has resurfaced my fondness of calm water; a boundless presence, where push and pull become one.
Inspired by the like-minded work of my close friend Chris, the creation, performance, and re-listening of these pieces was done with their therapeutic value in mind. Embracing that catharsis, I recorded myself during each of those re-listenings and layered those captures on top. Beneath the waves, you can make out the sounds of footsteps pacing the apartment floor, knuckles being pulled, or ice clinking as it finds itself a drink.
Each track is accompanied by musings on calm water, which you can read in the lyrics.
My hope is that these provide solace to others, in a time where harboring calm becomes increasingly valuable.
